For your loyal four-legged friend, you naturally want the best dog cushion . With all the options available, you sometimes can't see the forest for the trees. To determine which dog cushion is most suitable for you and your dog, we have a number of tips.
1. Buy the right size
First of all, it is important that your dog does not lie on a mattress that is too small. It is of course not nice when you do not have enough space to relax. But what size is suitable for your four-legged friend? With all our articles you will find information about the size of the cushion, and for which breed the cushion is suitable. Of course, there are always exceptions within the breeds. Also, males and females sometimes differ in length. Do you want to be sure that you buy the right cushion? Then measure your dog when he is lying down. Add 15 centimeters to the measured distance, then you are sure to be right.
2. Pay attention to the thickness of the dog cushion
The thickness of a mattress is something you can decide for yourself. However, we advise not to buy a pillow thinner than 10 centimeters. The thinner the pillow, the easier it is for the cold from the ground to penetrate the pillow. Your four-legged friend should of course lie on a dog pillow nice and soft, but it also needs a warm spot.
Furthermore, it depends on which dog you have. A heavier dog benefits more from a thicker mattress than a small dog. Our dog cushions all have a thickness of +/- 15 centimeters.
3. Which version is most suitable?
We believe that a high-quality dog cushion is the best place for your dog. However, a cushion must also fit into the interior. Therefore, make a well-considered choice about which dog cushion will look best in your home. Are you going for a round dog cushion, an oval one, or perhaps a rectangular cushion? And which colour is the most beautiful? Red, blue, grey or simply black? The choice is yours!
In addition to the design, the type is also important. Have you ever thought about an orthopedic dog cushion? These are very suitable for dogs with joint problems or other aches and pains. More information about orthopedic mattresses can be found here.
4. The best material
The material can be important in the search for the right dog cushion. For example, there are dog cushions made of leather, nylon, corduroy, cotton, etc. What fits well with your interior, and which material is practical?
We have described the characteristics of our materials below:
- Nylon: is water-repellent, easy to keep clean and can withstand a beating.
- Corduroy: is wonderfully soft, trendy, resistant to sunlight discolouration. It does get dirty faster though.
- Faux leather; robust appearance, retains heat, easy to clean.
- Nano: Water and dirt repellent, prevents unpleasant odours, antibacterial.
5. A replaceable outer cover
It is very convenient when a dog cushion has a changeable cover. When the cover needs to be washed, you can simply zip it off the cushion. It is also very nice to change the style, could you not choose between a corduroy cushion or one made of nylon? A second cover offers a solution.
6. The filling of a dog cushion
Dog cushions are usually filled with EPS beads, fiberfill, polyether flakes or foam. We have noted the characteristics of these materials for you.
- EPS beads: This is a beautiful material. The dog's warmth causes the cushion to conform to the body. EPS beads provide good support but are not true orthopedic cushions. When you buy a cushion with EPS beads, make sure that no recycled beads have been used, as these are of drastically lower quality. If the filling deteriorates, you can easily supplement or replace it with new EPS beads.
- Fiberfill: This material is very soft and retains the dog's heat. Cushions that retain heat are nice and cozy for your dog. Fiberfill is resilient and has a large volume. This makes it well suited for dog cushions.
- Polyether flakes: A dog cushion filled with flakes is volume-fixed and very comfortable. When the cushion is beaten up, it returns to its original state. In contrast to EPS beads, which sometimes sag. Over time, dents can form.
- Foam: A cushion filled with foam is usually filled with cold foam. When a cushion is filled with a combination of cold foam and memory foam, we speak of an orthopedic cushion. These cushions provide the best support for your dog.
